Rabbi Alan received smicha on January 12, 2020 through Aleph: Alliance for Jewish Renewal. His rabbinical journey really began 25 years ago, when he was called as a musician to perform music for Ruach Hamidbar from his Kabbalah Shekhinah CD. He studied at Eastman School of Music while growing up in Rochester, New York. Within two days of receiving a blessing from Rabbi Sarah Leah Mazeltov he met his beshert, Andalin.
While working as an assistant Attorney General for the State of Utah and then private practice, Alan continued with the musical compositions, performances, and recordings of his band, Desert Wind ~ all leading to his spiritual presence as Chair of the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable, Musical Chair for Sacred Music Night for the 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions, hospital Chaplain Intern with St. Mark’s Hospital, and now current chair of the North American Interfaith Network (NAIN).
Throughout the years, he has returned regularly to Ruach Hamidbar where he became our rabbinical intern in 2012. Rabbi Alan emerges with a depth of knowledge and experience in the traditions of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, Rabbi David Wolfe-blank, Rabbi Sarah Leah Grafstein, and Rabbi Leah Novick. We are now honored to welcome him as our Rabbi, in partnership with Reb Mazeltov.
